Building a home is a dream for many Nigerians. But between acquiring land and moving into that home lies a journey filled with decisions—some with lasting financial and personal consequences.

On Saturday, 17 October 2026, I joined Keble’s Home Circle for an engaging conversation on “Is It Really Cheaper to Build Your Own House in Nigeria? — The Hidden Costs of Self-Help Construction.”

We explored the realities of owner-led construction, the hidden costs that often escape initial budgets, and how thoughtful planning and professional guidance can make a difference.

One thought I particularly hope viewers will take away:

A home should not merely be affordable to build; it should also be affordable to live in.

The affordability question does not end when construction is completed. It extends into the everyday costs of occupying, operating and maintaining the home—and how well that home supports the lives within it.

My sincere thanks to Omolade Shittu and the Keble team for hosting this important conversation.

Whether you have already built, are building, or are considering your options, I hope this conversation helps you ask better questions and make better-informed decisions.

If you have built or are building your own home, what costs or decisions surprised you? Share your experience in the reader conversation below. It may help someone else make a better decision.

After all, we are not merely building houses. We are creating environments for life to flourish.
